One Ordinary Morning Turned Extraordinary—And Now It’s a Song! 🎵✨🎶🍀🦄🌈

Today was like most mornings. I savored a few slow sips from my oversized coffee cup as I gazed out the window at squirrels and birds putting on a lively little morning show out across the yard. This is one of my morning rituals. I was still a bit groggy from recently waking up. Today the early morning spring air looked crisp. I enjoy the mornings. In the morning the world always feels fresh and full of possibilities. I lazily contemplated my to-do list. Would I work on things in order today, or would I shift things around a bit? I leaned back in my chair and took another sip of coffee and I decided to linger a moment or two before I worked my list from the top down. I was still yawning. But then… something suddenly caught my eye.

I saw a flicker outside. Actually, it was more like a shimmer. It was a glint of gold in a grassy patch and it was just outside my window.

I squinted. It was probably just the sunlight bouncing off the morning dew. But then, a small round patch of clovers rustled a bit. As I looked closely I noticed the clovers didn’t rustle from the wind, but from something moving in them. My breath hitched and I leaned over toward the window to get a closer look.

I could see right in the middle of the clover patch that there was something small. There was something green. My mind scrambled for an explanation. Was it a tiny bird? I’d never seen a bird that small hopping around before. What was it? Was it a flicker of light? Was it a stray piece of fabric blown in by the breeze? Then it moved again. What was it? I moved again to try to get a better look. It was a tiny figure and it darted between clovers and the blades of grass! It had a tiny little hat tilted sideways that looked as if it was nearly tumbling off his head. My stomach jumped to my throat. It couldn’t be! I rubbed my eyes. I looked again. He was still there. It was a leprechaun!

I sucked in a quick breath. Could I catch him? Should I catch him? Would he really have a pot of gold? My mind quickly raced with every story I’d ever heard. Wide eyed, I thought of those tales of leprechaun tricks and treasure. I remembered, it is March! It is almost St. Patrick’s Day!

I quickly got up and ran as fast as I could toward my front door. As quietly as I could, I grabbed the front door handle. My fingers barely curled around the knob and I slowly opened the door and suddenly, Whoosh! A gust of wind swept through the rustling trees in our yard and sent a flurry of leaves into the air. Once again I was wide eyed with surprise. Something enormous moved above me! It cast a shadow over the yard. I looked up as my breath caught in my throat. A unicorn! It was not a cloud shaped like a horse. It was a real living unicorn! It was leaping across the sky right before my eyes! Its silvery rainbow mane rippled like liquid light. Its coat shimmered with a glow that didn’t seem to come from the sun that shown upon the creature, but somehow came from within the unicorn. It moved so gracefully and it seemed to look down at me as it glided by. The cool crisp air welcomed it, carrying it forward in a smooth elegant stride. Behind the unicorn there was a trail of rainbow dust. The dust wasn’t just the colors of a rainbow, but actual shimmering sparkling dust that hung in the air like tiny specks of stardust. For a brief moment the entire sky looked enchanted.

I blinked hard and then I blinked again. I rubbed my eyes and blinked yet again. This wasn’t possible. THIS WASN’T POSSIBLE! Are unicorns real? Unicorns aren’t real. Right?

I turned back to look at the leprechaun. Gone. Vanished. Not even a footprint in the grassy clover. There was just an empty patch of green grass and clovers where I was sure he had stood moments before.

Then I turned back to look toward the sky where the unicorn had been, but the unicorn was already drifting beyond the trees out of sight. Its shimmering trail had faded into the clouds on the horizon. The wind carried it away, leaving behind nothing but the ordinary beautiful morning blue sky filed with puffy white clouds.

I stood there frozen in my tracks for a moment. My heart was pounding. My hands were trembling. I had just seen a leprechaun. I knew I had. I had just seen a unicorn. I knew I did! It was a wonderful morning full of rainbow trails of beautiful magic.

Or had I? Could I have imagined the entire thing? I wanted to believe it was all real. Every part of me ached for it to be real. But the rational side of my brain whispered, You must have dreamed it.

And just as that thought settled in I yawned. I stretched and I almost spilled my coffee. I realized I was sitting in my chair by my window where I sit most mornings. I wonder now if I had even moved from my chair. Did I? Did I ever rush to the door and hurry outside? Or did I drift into an enchanted dream world?

My music room was quiet now. The soft, golden morning sunlight slipped through the windowpane, gently illuminating the space. But there were no shimmering specks of rainbow dust, no tiny footprints scattered across the floor. There was just the steady presence of my coffee, resting beside my computer workstation and piano keyboard. The music was waiting for me.

It was all just a morning dream. But it felt so real. Could it have been real? For a long moment, I just sat there, staring at my hands, half expecting to find a sprinkle of gold rainbow dust on my fingers. I almost laughed at myself.

An idea was born that day. I had been so excited in my dream. I felt that childlike wonder, that rush of magic, that thrill of believing in the impossible. And now… now it was gone unless I could capture it another way. I grabbed my staff paper and started writing. If I couldn’t keep the dream, I could at least turn it into a song. And that’s how Leprechauns and Unicorns was born. 🍀✨🎶
