Has it happened at your house?
Cute kitten video
It sure is memorable when you bring new kittens into your home. They’re small, fluffy bundles of energy with an enormous dose of chaos!
We decided to get a kitten. We looked around and it was not long until we found the perfect one. This kitten was absolutely adorable. We fell in love with the sweet little bundle almost instantly. Who wouldn’t? Here’s the catch. The kitten had a brother and yep! You guessed it. We just couldn’t leave the brother alone there looking all sad eyed. Right?? 🤣😂🤣 We couldn’t take just one. Oh, noooooo. We just HAD to take both. (cue the facepalm) I think that was the mistake.😂 But really, I was absolutely, one-hundred percent, completely smitten with both of those adorable kittens. And I was totally, one-hundred percent, completely unprepared for what was to come. Oh my! What fun! And at the same time, oh, the terror of it all!
Eeeeks! If you’ve ever had new kittens, then I bet you know exactly what I am remembering as I sit here and think about our “New Kittens” adventure! 😂😂😂 As I type these words it is still difficult for me to contain my own laughter. These little fur balls were determined to turn my house into their own personal racetrack. One minute I’d be peacefully walking down the hall and the next I’d be stumbling forward, arms flailing, as those two little feline acrobats zipped between my feet in a frantic game of “run, run, catch me if you can!” and “let’s see how quickly we can knock over the human!”
Nighttime was no different. In fact, I think it was worse. I can’t even begin to count the times I was jolted awake by those two darlings. My heart began to pound as I heard thumpety, thumpety, thump, thump, THUMP as the kittens raced down the hall, across the bedroom, and then scrambled and scratched themselves up the side of the bed soaring right across my face like some sort of feline trapeze artist. Dive under the covers? Oh, you bet I did! “Get, get, GET I’d holler” and then off they’d scurry with a rip, roarin’ tear. Eventually I’d drift back to slumber land and at some point in the night, “thumpety, thump, thump again. “Quick! Dive!! Here they come again!” They always found a way to launch themselves right across my face. What in the world? Go figure! Why was it always right across my face!? 😆🤪
Now for the curtain climbing - oh boy, the curtain climbing! Those two kittens would scamper up the drapes as if they were some sort of American Ninja Warrior climbing for 1st prize or as if they were racing to get to the top of Mount Everest. The curtains would swing back and forth as the kittens dug in tightly with those tiny needles at the end of those sweet adorable paws. I cringed from across the room. My poor curtains didn’t stand a chance against those sharp claws. Can you say, “shred?” Needless to say, I no longer have curtains in my house.
Of course, there were quieter moments too. Like when they would curl up in a cozy little ball right beside me, purring sweetly. Were they trying to make me forget they had just turned my entire house into their own private jungle gym? How hard it is to stay angry at something so adorable! They’d yawn and stretch out those tiny paws and then look up at me with those big innocent eyes. I couldn’t help but laugh through the chaos. The memory of those new kittens still brings a smile to my face.
Thinking back on the antics of those wild and oh so naughty but playful kittens inspired me to create an adorable and very easy Early Elementary piano piece called New Kittens. The lyrics in this piece will make you smile. This piano piece captures the playful energy and mischievous spirit of kittens in music that my students love to play. New Kittens is perfect for a fall recital. Can you just imagine your students dressed in kitty cat costumes, hamming it up on stage?! But the fun won’t stop there; this piece will be just as suitable for any other recital or even a festival later in the year. Consider using New Kittens in the NFMC festival for a primary choice piece!
New Kittens is an Early Elementary Solo that is centered around Middle C, making it easily accessible for even the earliest beginners. It is set in a playful 3/4 time. An optional teacher duet is included that adds additional charm when added to the performance. Students will love playing and singing the piece, which makes it an excellent tool for encouraging sight-reading. I have my more advanced students play the teacher part which makes it a fun ensemble piece as well.
Even when the goal isn’t to perfect every piece, reading a variety of music is essential for developing fluent music readers. Pieces like New Kittens are so fun that students won’t even realize they’re building important reading skills! As part of the Studio Savers Songs for Animals Collection, New Kittens is more than just a cute recital piece. New Kittens is an engaging way for students to read, read and then read more - while falling in love with making music. I can’t wait to see the smiles on students' faces as they explore this piece and imagine their own little kitten adventures!
Is there anything more adorable than kittens and music? I’m really not sure there is!
