Do you know what a group of lemurs is called?

Learning about a group of lemurs led to a fun Late Elementary Piano Piece.

The simplest questions lead to unexpected adventures. I was inspired by a curious trivia question: “Do you know what a group of lemurs is called?” The answer? “A conspiracy.” That one word sent my imagination spinning, and soon, I found myself crafting an Elementary Piano Solo called The Lemur Conspiracy. Here’s how it all began.

It started with a visit to the Houston Interactive Zoo. Wandering through the exhibits, I marveled at animals and I even fed some of them! But it was when my son and daughter-in-law were feeding the lemurs that I was stopped in my tracks. After feeding the lemurs and learning all about them, my daughter-in-law, Hannah, came up to me and said, “do you know what a group of lemurs is called?” I thought for a moment and admitted that I did not. Hannah responded, “A conspiracy! Isn’t that funny!” We both laughed.

What an interesting name for a group of lemurs! I looked up, and sure enough, there were several ring-tailed lemurs perched among the branches, gazing down at us with wide eyes and playful expressions. It was so delightfully absurd that I couldn’t help but laugh all the more. The idea of these bright-eyed creatures being part of a "conspiracy" was both hilarious and charming.

Then a spark ignited and my imagination began to spin … A conspiracy? Here? At the zoo? What could this be about? Were people planning something secret? Why wasn’t anyone alarmed? With growing curiosity, I decided to investigate.

What a great idea for a story line for an Elementary Piano Solo! I had to write down the lyrics.

I learned something at the zoo that day -  “A group of lemurs is called a conspiracy. That’s all it is—just a bunch of lemurs hanging out together.” That little trivia nugget sparked something in me. The mental image of those lemurs, mischievously plotting among the treetops, quickly turned into lyrics and a melody in my head—a playful tune full of bounce and curiosity. I was eager to get back to my piano, so I could weave those feelings into a piece that captured the whimsical fun of that zoo experience into a playful Elementary Piano Solo that kids would love to play.

The Lemur Conspiracy is now a lighthearted Late Elementary Piano Piece piece that tells the story of my day at the Houston Interactive Zoo day musically. It’s full of lively rhythms and bounces, just like those clever lemurs leaping through the branches. It is perfect for piano recitals, festivals, adjudicated events or just playing for fun. The piece stands well on its own as a solo and is super fun when coupled with the teacher duet.
